Borghetto sul Mincio, one of Italy’s most picturesque villages from “Traveling Dave”

Borghetto sul Mincio is a hamlet in the region of Veneto in Northern Italy. It has been awarded with the title of one of the most picturesque villages in Italy and it is easy to see why: situated, as the name implies, on the river Mincio which flows from Lake Garda into the river Po, the village consists of a few houses and old mills that seems almost to  have been constructed as a movie set.

The best views of the village are from the nearby Ponte Visconteo (Visconti Bridge), a bridge that originally connected the Scaligero Castle, still visible on the top of the hill above the area.

The name Borghetto translates as “fortified settlement”, its center, the “antico borgo” is always busy with tourists mingling around, browsing the local shops or having a meal or drink and enjoying the scenery.

Due to the high volume of visitors, mainly Italians on a day out, the restaurants in Borghetto have been doing a brisk business serving the local specialty, tortellini of Valeggio, the famous filled Italian fresh pasta for which this area is well known for.

And thanks to its fairy tale like location, Borghetto is often chosen by many newlyweds as the place where they have their pictures taken, before joining their guests at the wedding reception in one of the riverside restaurants.

The main attraction in the village are the old mills that can be seen in between the little houses on the river and the church of St.Mark’s the Evangelist.

And even this corner of Italy has not been spared by the custom to secure “love padlocks” on railings and throw the keys in the river.
